Pests in the White House

Plan for your own DIY pest control.

We dream of salsa, relaxing shade, and beautifully scented flowers, not a plot full of pest control. However, come summer time when the mosquitoes are gnats are flying around your head and mosquitoes have found that you are a suitable snack, you’ll wish you did plant at least something you can crush the leaves of to spread the oils on your skin.

The infographic from Part Select lists several of the most common methods of pest control. Geraniums, though, are a long standing myth. My grandmother tried to plant these ones in hopes to get rid of the nasty smelling citronella candles she hated, but even after two years of these so-called mosquito plants, I can honestly say they attracted more mosquito, not repelled them.

Eliminating this, what can you use? Most people have heard of using citronella (a grass) and lemongrass for keeping for mosquitoes out, but did you know you can also delight in lavender, which is also thought to keep the fly population down? Take a look at the infographic below to see what other types of plants you may be able to grow to help keep flying and crawling pests at bay.

Oh, and the geraniums on the list? Don’t rule them out just yet. It is possible that some of cultivars of geraniums may be effective at driving away some species of flies. The jury is still out on if it’s a good buy, though, instead of just using some of the others.
